Gilbert Octane black green children's rugby helmet certified
The Gilbert Octane black and green helmet is designed for children who are beginning or playing rugby in clubs, from mini-under-8s to under-14s. Certified according to current standards for soft protections, it combines single-layer EVA foam that absorbs light to moderate impacts, a velcro-adjustable chin strap, and side openings to limit overheating. Available sizes (XS, S, M, L) cover head circumferences from approximately 50 to 58 cm, or ages 6 to 14 depending on build. This model positions itself as an affordable entry-level solution, without the multi-layer foam or antibacterial lining of more technical helmets, but sufficient for regular use in rugby school or recreational play.
The two-tone black and green design avoids a generic look while remaining sober, compatible with most club kits. The foam remains relatively compact: it does not add excessive volume and limits hearing impairment, but ventilation remains basic compared to Air or Vapour models. For a child who plays one to two times a week and does not systematically find himself in the front row, this helmet offers a correct protection/price ratio. On the other hand, if your child is a prop, plays often in closed scrums or sweats heavily, a model with mesh lining and enhanced ventilation will be more suitable.
What size should I choose for an 8-year-old child?
Measure the head circumference just above the ears. An 8-year-old child is generally size S (52-54 cm) or M (54-56 cm) depending on their build. The helmet should stay in place when the child shakes their head.
Is the helmet machine washable?
No. Wash by hand in lukewarm water with mild soap, rinse thoroughly and let air dry, never on a radiator. EVA foam does not withstand machine washing and high temperatures well.
Does the helmet protect against concussions?
No soft helmet can prevent a concussion. It attenuates surface impacts (cuts, scalp bruising, ears), but does not replace learning proper technique and safe tackling.
Technical specifications
Care adviceHand wash only, lukewarm water (max 30°C) with mild soap or dish liquid. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue, gently wring out without twisting the foam. Air dry, never in direct sunlight or on a radiator — heat degrades the cellular structure of EVA and reduces its absorption capacity. Avoid washing machines and dryers which compress and deform the foam. A well-maintained helmet retains its properties for two to three seasons depending on usage intensity. DesignThe Octane helmet is based on single-layer EVA foam of medium density, which absorbs impacts by deformation then returns to its original shape. This material, also used in sports mats or running shoe soles, offers a good compromise between lightness, flexibility and production cost. Unlike multi-layer models such as the Fusion, the Octane does not layer multiple densities — protection is therefore uniform but less progressive against violent impacts. Side openings allow minimal air circulation, but the lack of mesh lining limits sweat evacuation. The velcro chin strap ensures simple and quick adjustment, ideal for children who put on and remove their equipment alone. This helmet is intended for young players seeking basic certified protection, without claiming the technical level of the Air, Vapour or Fusion ranges. BrandGilbert has equipped rugby worldwide since 1823 and remains one of the few brands to manufacture the entire protection range: helmets, shoulder pads, mouthguards. The English brand's philosophy is based on technical segmentation: each model corresponds to a level of play and a specific budget, rather than offering a single "all-purpose" helmet. The Octane is positioned in the entry-level children's range, below the Air and Vapour, but retains Gilbert's certification and manufacturing standards. This approach allows parents to choose a helmet adapted to their child's playing level, without overpaying for unnecessary features at this stage. |
